Getting to Maya Moon Lodge

The easiest way to get here is from Panajachel. Take a taxi, shuttle or chicken bus to Panajachel, from there take a public boat going to San Marcos. We are just before San Marcos, just after Tzununá; tell the captain “Maya Moon” he will bring you to our private dock, cost 25q. You will arrive at the lake entrance. Walk up a few steps to the reception.

The alternative route is via San Marcos. This way is slightly more difficult; the road from the Panamericana Highway is longer and once you arrive in San Marcos, you drive through the village and then the road is very uneven and bumpy for about 10 minutes. You will arrive at the road entrance. Cars can be parked on the quiet road behind our property, ( we park our car here .We do not have a hotel car park).

Please note there are many steps down to reception and the lake from the road entrance.

We recommend driving to Panajachel, parking your car at a nearby safe parking area, just near the public boat area in Panajachel called El Cayuco. When you drive into Pana take the first right just past the petrol station, drive down until you come to the last left turning, you will see El Cayuco Car park. You take the public boat from around there, you can’t miss the public dock.

We do advise that you park your car in Panajachel, then take a boat here. The road from the Panamericana Highway is best for a 4-wheel drive car. The common and easier form of transport is by boat.

Shuttles can be taken directly to San Marcos La Laguna as well, from major destinations such as Antigua, Xela and the like. From San Marcos, a tuk-tuk can be taken directly to Maya Moon Lodge. We still advise going to Panajachel, then taking a boat from here.

Maya Moon Lodge is happy to arrange private transit to and from the airport, as well as to or from other major destinations in the country e.g. Antigua.

Cost for a private taxi/shuttle is $120/900 Q directly from the airport to our road entrance with our reliable driver Dionicio, you pay him directly. He prefers payment in quetzals as do all places and people in Guatemala, there is an ATM machine at the airport. We need your flight arrival details to book the private shuttle. The driver will be at arrivals with a card with your name on it.

Dionicio or one of his drivers will also pick you up in Antigua at your hotel and bring you directly to our road entrance cost 800 Q or travel to Antigua. Other private shuttle options from Maya Moon Road entrance are – To El Paredon 1300 Q – To Lanquin 2100 Q – To Xela 600 Q

Chichicastenango – The famous market – $800 return — Depart 8.30am – Return 2.30pm

Also from Antigua it is very easy for you to arrange a public shuttle at 8am and 12pm cost 100 Q ($12) they will pick you up at your hotel. Bring you to Panajachel or San Marcos La Laguna.

Maya Moon Lodge also has road access to Tzununá, San Marcos, San Pablo, San Juan,San Pedro and Santiago.

Getting around Lake Atitlán

Small boats (called lanchas) are the main form of transport around the lake. Public lanchas run daily starting at 6.20 AM, and travel to most destinations around the lake. Lanchas leave from San Pedro (west side of the lake) and travel to Panajachel (east side of the lake), then return.

The clockwise order of stops is as follows: San Pedro, San Juan, San Marcos, Maya Moon Lodge, Tzununa, Jaibalito, Santa Cruz, and lastly Panajachel. You can expect a public boat to pass every twenty minutes at most villages around the lake.

If you are coming from San Pedro, take a public boat going in the direction of San Marcos, stay on the boat and tell the captain “Maya Moon”, he will bring you to our private dock just after San Marcos, just before Tzununa cost 25 Q

We have a few reliable local tuk-tuk drivers, who live nearby in Tzununá and will come any time to drive you wherever you would like to go. However it is easiest to go to the road and one will pass by. On your return from San Marcos – we recommend getting a Tzununá tuk tuk they are parked on the road towards Tzununá by the pharmacy, cost 20 Q to Maya Moon, or 10 Q each person.

Nearby San Marcos, just a five minute ride away, has a variety of interesting shops, restaurants and many holistic businesses. There are also fruit and vegetable stands.
